OJC Drop box for a peer-reviewable or collaborative project Print Window
Home > Drop box for...

If you want to have a Drop Box to collect student homework within Canvas, the best way to do so is to use "Assignments" tool. However, if you want to create a project that two or more students work collaboratively, you can use "People" > "Group Set."

Group sets for individual homework/project (peer reviewable)

In order to create a peer-reviewable homework/project, you can create a group set with only one group that contains all students in the same group. Initially, the instructor creates a Group Set (e.g., "Drop Boxes") as shown below.

Group set 1

Group set 2

After a group set is created, you can add a group (e.g., "Homework 1/Project 1") as shown below by clicking on "+ Group" button. By default, all students are included in the group.

Group set 3

Group set 4

After creating a group, click on the three dots on the right and choose "Visit Group Homepage."

Group set 5

The group's homepage opens as shown below. Click on "Files."

Then, "Files" of this group called "Homework 1" opens as shown below. Here you can ask students to create their own folder by their name ("Masato Kikuchi") and upload files to that folder. Caution: Since all students are in the same group, the content of each individual folder is visible to all other students. This is a great way to enable peer reviews.

Adding group 2

If there is another homework/project, you can just add a second group (e.g., "Homework 2/Project 2") to the same group set (i.e., "Drop Boxes").

 Group sets for collaborative homework/project

If you create a group set with multiple groups, you can have collaborative homework/ project groups within a group set.

Initially, you can create a group set (e.g., "Project 1") by clicking on "+ Group Set" button. At the same time, the instructor can create multiple groups (e.g., "Project 1 1," "Project 1 2," etc.) within the group set and assign group members automatically (or manually) as shown below.

Adding group 3

The group set "Project 1" now has three groups and the members of each group can upload files to each group folder. Unlike the first example, this time students can view the files uploaded within the same group and not the files belonging to other groups.

Adding group 4

The instructor can then visit each group's Homepage and grade the project files separately.
